In 1964, the United States declared open involvement in Vietnam, supporting the Southern Vietnamese in their battle against the Northern Vietnamese and the Viet Cong. American involvement was directly related to the policy of containment, or "containing communism". The USA was attempting to prevent the "domino effect" from overcoming Asian countries.
The deadly cost of this effort was 58,200 American lives. As the years rolled by and more and more faces disappeared from cities and towns nationwide,a nonconformist and curious crowd emerged from their ashes. Why were these American men dying? What were we even doing in Vietnam? When these Americans were constantly being offered the same, vague answers to those questions, anger rose in their stomachs and in their flaming hearts. The Civil Rights Movement was already in full swing. The seeds of another revolution had already been sown. |
